Our Department The Department of Biomedical Sciences (DSBM) at the University of Sassari is a center of excellence in biomedical education and research. Established in 2011, it was created with the aim of fostering synergies among different scientific fields. Its structure was designed to integrate expertise in the areas of Biological and Medical Sciences through a strongly multidisciplinary approach.Over the years, the DSBM has welcomed faculty members from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, encouraging the integration of methodologies and knowledge ranging from molecular and cellular biology to clinical physiology, from bioinformatics to genetics, as well as cognitive psychology and sport sciences. This approach enables the Department to address complex issues related to human health and scientific development from an integrated, innovative, and translational perspective. The Department plays a central role in teaching and research within the University, providing foundational courses across numerous degree programs, coordinating advanced laboratory activities, and promoting international mobility for students, faculty, and technical-administrative staff. Moreover, through collaborations with healthcare institutions, research centers, and private companies, the DSBM significantly contributes to the scientific and technological development of the region, fostering knowledge transfer and enhancing the social impact of academic activities. Vision and Mission The vision of the DSBM is to become a national and international reference point in biomedical education and research, promoting a rigorous, multidisciplinary scientific approach capable of generating innovative knowledge to safeguard human and environmental health. The Department seeks to build an integrated scientific community in which students, researchers, and faculty work together to develop original, practical solutions to real-world problems in healthcare and biomedicine. The mission of the DSBM is articulated into four main dimensions, each with clear objectives and concrete actions:Teaching. To provide high-quality educational pathways in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, with a strong emphasis on laboratory practice, professional internships, and international mobility. The goal is to train skilled and conscientious professionals, prepared either to enter the workforce or to pursue advanced research careers.Research. To carry out basic and translational research in four key areas of excellence: experimental and applied biology, chronic degenerative diseases, precision medicine, and the one-health approach. The Department fosters collaboration among interdisciplinary groups, participates in national and international projects, produces high-impact scientific publications, and promotes innovation.Third mission and social impact. To transfer scientific knowledge to society, enhance the economic value of research results, promote science outreach, and support initiatives in lifelong learning and continuing education. The DSBM collaborates with schools, public institutions, enterprises, and international organizations to contribute to the social and cultural development of the community.Healthcare. To integrate teaching and research with clinical practice at the University Hospital of Sassari, contributing to patient care, translational research, and the implementation of new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.Through this integrated vision, the DSBM aims to strengthen its role as a center of scientific, educational, and social excellence, capable of training highly qualified professionals, generating cutting-edge knowledge, and making a positive impact on both the local and international community.
