[SCIENCE MONDAY] - Pigs as a model for human biomedical research: a new study characterizes macrophage responses to two key inflammatory cytokines

Pigs are emerging as the animal model of choice for human biomedical research, given their immunological similarities to humans. This study examined the response of porcine macrophages to two cytokines of the IL-1 family: IL-1β, which promotes inflammation, and IL-1Ra, its natural antagonist. The results show how these cells maintain a dynamic balance between the two molecules, improving the interpretation of translational studies in humans.
