[SCIENCE MONDAY] - A time capsule for reconstructing the origins of Pinna nobilis

Through the genetic study of ancient samples and surviving individuals, the research reconstructs the long evolutionary history of Pinna nobilis, the large bivalve that is a symbol of the Mediterranean and is now at risk of extinction. The analyses show that the species diverged in the western Mediterranean 2.5 million years ago from an Atlantic ancestor, and that the modern mitochondrial lineages have reached us unchanged since the Pleistocene
