The pandemic left its mark on influenza as well. While COVID monopolized public attention, containment measures (masks, distancing, and reduced social interactions) drastically slowed the circulation of the A(H1N1)pdm09 seasonal flu virus. The result was a sharp decline in its genetic variability, an evolutionary slowdown that clearly emerges from genetic analyses and shows just how much the pandemic influenced the recent history of the virus.
