[SCIENCE MONDAY] - The metabolome of extremely preterm infants shows specific alterations related to biological sex and antibiotic exposure

This study investigated sex-specific metabolomic differences in extremely preterm infants (<28 weeks) in relation to antibiotic exposure. The results show that antibiotic therapy amplifies mitochondrial-related metabolic alterations predominantly in males, suggesting that sex is a crucial biological variable for the development of personalized therapeutic strategies in neonatology.
