[SCIENCE MONDAY] - A study analyzes the effect of metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes, taking biological sex into account 5 January 2026 The study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology analyzed the effect of metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes, stratified by sex. Metabolomic analysis and the assessment of specific miRNAs revealed that the metabolic and epigenetic effects of the drug differ between men and women, with women being more sensitive to metformin-induced changes. From a clinical standpoint, these findings show that the pharmacodynamic effects of metformin are influenced by biological sex, particularly with regard to energy metabolism and miRNA profiles. These data support the concept that sex should be considered a biological variable in the pharmacotherapy of type 2 diabetes and indicate the potential for sex-based personalized therapeutic strategies to optimize metabolic control and reduce diabetes-related complications.
