Staphylococcus aureus dynamically reorganizes its metabolism to maintain fitness across distinct infected tissues. Analyses in murine models of skin, kidney, and spleen infection identified genes required in a site-specific manner. Some fitness determinants are shared, whereas others emerge only in particular microenvironments. These findings outline key metabolic adaptations and potential therapeutic vulnerabilities.
